Art Tips - The Foot by ArandaDill
ALRIGHT SO to answer your questions, I’ve decided a brief tutorial on how I go about doing the art thing is in order. so here, let us begin:
PART 1
let us begin with a basic sketch. I do all my sketching in Paint Tool SAI (and on days when i’m feeling particularly masochistic, I sketch in Photoshop.) Nothing fancy, just quick fluid strokes with the tablet pen to establish form and movement.
here’s the setup:
PART 2
thank you tumblr for re-sizing this, as i knew you would.
I almost exclusively use the marker tool to sketch. it is not imperative that you use it, it is just what i’ve grown comfortable with. in conjecture with the eraser tool, I flesh out the areas of the sketch that will give me the most trouble when inking time comes along (I tend to always make sure my undersketch is as close to the finished image as i can get it WITHOUT going completely anal about it. I just want to make sure all the pieces are in the right place. it avoids headaches later down the road).PART 3: the finished sketch
the face. he has one now. and also a cane. for being badass and
smacking your hoes back in line.
MOVING ON.PART 4:
I’ve colored the undersketch with a red so as not to confuse it with the black of the lines. (to do this i just check the Preserve Opacity box on the right, under the Paints Effects drop down menu.)
From there I use the Pen Tool to do all the lines. ALL THE LINES.
(I also use the pen tool to help fill in flat colors. that and the handy-dandy Fill Tool)
PART 5: Finished Lines + Color
This is basically what all my finished pieces look like before i add flat colors, and
this is what they look like with flat colors. (ok, not COMPLETELY FLAT. I used the Oil Water Tool to add very simple light and shadow to Loki’s skin.)
but man it looks kinda blah right now. Easy fix?
COLOR THE LINE ART! the way to do this is the same way I colored the underscketch. check the Preserve Opacity box under the Paints Effects drop down menu, pick a color and PAINT!
ok, at this point, I move the image into photoshop. (paintoolSAI saves all images BY DEFAULT as .SAI images. As you go to save your work, make sure to save it as a .PSD file so photoshop can recognize your image.)
PART 6: Photoshopzzzzzzzz
I use Photoshop CS3, and I don’t really use it for the physical drawing aspect of my work, mainly for color editing, textures, layer adjustments and effects, resizing for prints and also for saving files in different ways. (i can only make gifs in photoshop, not sure how to make them in SAI, if you can. You just have more File —> Save options in this sucker). this is my basic set up for CS3 and for this image in particular I didn’t do much else other than a very slight color adjustment and an added shadow.
Here, have a gratuitous close up of his face to see how shitty these lines actually are.
Once I’m satisfied with the image’s look, i flatten the layers, resize for the intrawebs, save, and post.
HAZAH! THE FINISHED PIECE!
yup i think that’s it. hope that was helpful??
(AND MAN THANK YOU I’M GLAD YOU LIKE MY SILLY ARTSTUFF!!!! AND NO WORRIES ABOUT THE PRINTS!! YOU CAN BUY THOSE AT ANYTIME!!! <3)
I don’t know if this has been talked about before, but there are some things I learned from my stage make up class!
First
I was told not to repeatedly put your sponge in your makeup! Apparently you will still have oils in your face and it will mix with your makeup once you put your sponge back in it (kinda like double dipping!). My instructor basically calls our ben nye a “Petri dish” when you do that. What we do is we scoop a little bit of the make up and put it on something (a paper plate works, our instructor makes us use lame AOL cds also) and apply it from there. Also, throw your sponge away when you’re done, reusing them isn’t a good idea also.
Second
Use witch hazel to clean your face before applying! Baby wipes work also. I’ve heard that witch hazel does dry out people’s faces, so not everyone will work with it >:
Third
Any way you apply it is up to you, even putting on the powder and whatnot. My instructor actually made us buy the powder that was put in a sock and then we dab it on our face then brush it off.
Fourth
To wash it off, we use baby shampoo! No tears of course, works wonders. It gets most of it off for me except for my eyes, and by then I put some of the shampoo on a washcloth and then wash it off then. As stated before, E.L.F’s makeup wipes also do wonders. Witch Hazel also helps when getting little things off too.
I hope this helped you guys! I certainly learned a lot from this class and just wanted to share c:submitted by benmaru:

Some building block references my Life Drawing teacher drew up for us for our Figure Drawing class. Thought I would impart the wisdom.
THIS IS LIKE PORNOGRAPHY FOR MY ARTISTIC MIND
HNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
*CHANGE RESOLUTION* not *CHANGE SIZE*
make sure “constrain proportions” is checked
and type a number thats smaller than your original number!
even a little resizing makes a difference, ultimately smoothing out lines and hiding smaller mistakes
im sure theres better ways of this stuff that i dont know about though so yesu

What is this?
A community project for the Homestuck/MSPA fandom so we can get together and have fun. You’re going to make a 200x200 image of your otp, ot3, or whatever ships you like and submit it to be part of a “stitched” together quilt no matter what it is.Due Date?
The final deadline will be in mid-September. There won’t be an official deadline until a later date, but it is several months from now so that is not a problem.Guidelines/Rules?
- Your piece must be 200x200, no bigger or smaller.
- It’s okay to crop an old piece of yours for the quilt, but it’s suggested you make something unique for the project.
- Put some effort into it!! You want your ship to look super nice, right?
- Absolutely nothing explicit. As much as we like to tread in those waters, this is a project for everyone!!
- Yes, moirails/kismeses/auspistices are allowed.
- Do not take this as an opportunity to make fun of other ships. Meaning anything that is submitted as a “joke” will not be added.
- This is a visual project, meaning that fanfiction/fansongs/and etc. are unable to be part of it.
- You may make a maximum of FIVE submissions. Put them all into the ONE email though and be sure those are the ones that you like the most.
Where to submit?
Because tumblr is unreliable, submit your piece(s) to shippingquilt@gmail.com. Title it with YOUR TUMBLR URL. Try to keep all of your submissions in one email and once you submit, you cannot edit/replace your piece(s).—
And finally, if there are any questions, please feel free to send me an ask. In the end, the complete quilt will be uploaded onto deviantart.
Please reblog to spread the word if you’re interested in the idea/would like to participate. (◡‿◡✿)
Regarding the first image, the way I draw the hip area and legs in general is pretty exaggerated, I remove a lot of muscle and curve the bones. The left of each set is more correct if you’re aiming to be more realistic.
The second image is just how I personally stretch legs into different body types. The third is one of my most generic poses and some feet. I approach the bottoms of the feet the same way I do hands and I make toes by just overlapping the little circles. The fourth image features some attempts at different positions I don’t show as much, an area I still have to work on myself.

I’ve still yet to recover from my recent lethargy, so this was all I could think to do… but I hope this is of at least some use! Sorry! :(
This is really good to look at, thank you for posting it!
Gosh I need to practice my legs/feet so much. ;;
